Solving issues, winning trials, wearing pink
The snow most definitely does not stop the students at Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR) High School from doing what they do best — taking part in extracurricular activities and getting involved!
HAFTR High sent a team of 12 that included freshmen, sophomores and juniors, accompanied by Social Studies teacher Kenneth Goldman, to Connecticut on Feb. 9, to participate Yeshiva University National Model United Nations (YUNMUN).
Yeshiva high school students from all over the U.S., Canada, Brazil, and South Africa gathered for this awesome three-day experience. Participants, who are assigned a country to represent, met in different committees to help solve world issues. Those from HAFTR either represented Macedonia or Bangladesh. YUNMUN is definitely a great way to meet many new people and learn about important issues happening in the world.
The hard work and practices paid off! The HAFTR Mock Trial team did an amazing job on Feb. 11 at their first meet, when the prosecution team went up against Oceanside High School. At the next meet, defense will be up against Oyster Bay High School. If HAFTR wins, they advance to the next round. Congratulations and the best of luck to the Mock Trial team!
If the week hadn’t been fabulous already, Sharsheret Pink Day was in full effect on Feb. 12! Sharsheret is a national non-profit organization supporting young women and their families, of all Jewish backgrounds, facing breast cancer. In order to raise breast cancer awareness, HAFTR teamed up with Sharsheret, and everyone wore pink. A Chinese auction with wonderful prizes was the perfect way to raise money for such an inspiring organization, and yummy pink doughnuts were distributed during breakfast.
Last week was an especially exciting week at HAFTR. The school is, without a doubt, proud of all their outstanding students! Keep up the impressive work!
