Increase in Five Towns shopping as snowstorm approaches

In preparation for the blizzard expected to hit the Five Towns Monday into Tuesday, residents are preparing to stay indoors, making sure they have plenty of provisions to ride out the snowstorm.
To accommodate the shoppers in the stores, several supermarkets in the Five Towns are also stocking up on their merchandise to be able to help their customers.
At Key Food in Woodmere, the amount of shoppers in the store is much like a holiday season of shopping, according to Ray Saunders, the store manager. “We’re definitely seeing a lot more customers in here,” he said. “I’d say it’s twice the amount of volume as we saw during the holiday and Thanksgiving season.”
At Key Food, the customers are buying a lot of junk food, Saunders said. “They are buying items like chips, candy and cakes,” he said. “They are also buying bottled water, canned foods like tuna, and other non-perishable items. But I am seeing a lot of our customers buying fun food items.” Donuts were very popular, he added.
In Cedarhurst at Gourmet Glatt, store manager Howie Klagsbrun said the store was prepared to handle the influx of shoppers. “Obviously, like every supermarket, we’re bombarded with shoppers,” he said. “We are well stocked here. In fact, we just received another truck shipment this morning. At our store, we are selling more fresh milk, eggs, cheese, breads, meats and poultry. We are definitely well-prepared to help our shoppers. I can count on one hand the number of items we’re out of stock.”
At Brach’s Supermarket in Lawrence, a manager said that while he couldn’t speak specifically about the number of shoppers, their store was also prepared to handle a higher volume of patrons. They ordered more storm weather essentials like rock salt, bread and milk due to the approaching storm.
