A family man and great friend remembered at Inwood fundraiser

More than 100 people attended The Joey Dowling Memorial Fundraiser to raise scholarship money and recall the caring personality and great humor of former The Den bartender and longtime Inwood resident.

The Dec. 2 event was held at The Den, a 50-year-old bar on Sheridan Boulevard in Inwood. Attendees enjoyed food and musical entertainment by Mark Magliaro and Brian Happaney.

Dowling began bartending at The Den in 1995 before he passed away in June from coronary heart disease. He also worked at the Ye Olde Tavern in Far Rockaway from 1972 until he bought the bar in 1982 and operated it until it closed in 1995.

According to Jimmy Boyle, owner of The Den, $5,000 was raised for a scholarship that will go to a graduating high school senior in the Five Towns.
