A look at Lawrence High School’s “Spirit Week”

Posted

Let’s take a peek into Lawrence High School hallways during “Spirit Week” (Oct. 17 to 22). It started out with College Jersey Day in which students came to school sporting their favorite college jerseys.

On Tuesday aka “Decade Day” put some life and soul in the week. Throughout the day it was interesting to encounter students from different decades. By far my favorite was a senior, Connie Vollmer, who was a hippie in a dress rocking an Afro.

Students brought the lethargy of the night into the hallways on Pajama Day, by far the favorite day of most students. With students holding onto their pillow pets and stuffed animals in class, how could anyone be taken seriously? Pajama day was definitely the most relaxing day during the week.

The next day confusion arose. Take a guess, what day was Thursday? I’ll give you a hint; Thing 1, Thing 2, Thing 3, and Thing 4 were roaming the halls. You guessed it; Thursday was Twin Day (and if you guessed Dr. Seuss Day… maybe the members of Key Club next year can consider that). But I was not joking Things 1, 2, 3, and 4 were roaming the hallways of Lawrence High; Brittany McQueen, Briana McQueen, Allison Coronado, and Kayla Mora came in dressed as quadruplets.

Then on Friday, it was Blue and Gold Day. Many students came in wearing the school colors to show their spirit. Gabi Golan displayed the most spirit, as she came dressed as the school mascot, a lion, and stayed in the outfit all day long. That’s some school spirit right there.

After the introduction of the fall sports teams and some amazing performances by the cheerleaders, the African American Club, and Color Guard, the Royal Court was announced. This year’s king and queen were Dom Saldutti and Michelle Vainblat, respectively. The senior prince was David Farooqi and his princess was Janora Blackman. The junior prince was Kenny Perez and his princess was Storm Hurst. The sophomore princess’, Tara Behar, prince was Dwayne Daniels. Finally the freshmen prince was Malik Mavruk with Amaiya Wilks as his princess.

The big day finally arrived, Homecoming 2011. Students marched from the Lawrence train station all the way to the high school football field. The Color Guard and Marching Band waved their flags and played their instruments, which attracted the attention of many local residents. All of this led up to the long awaited football game against Lynbrook. Maybe it was the cheering of the cheerleaders or Spirit Week that helped our football team get energized for the game and win 36-0.

Setting up for all these activities is not easy. Members of Key Club put a lot of effort into the week and their hard work paid off. Hats off to Key Club president Karen Dermer, vice president Connie Vollmer, and advisor Isaac Mayo, along with everyone else who helped make “Spirit Week” a success.
