A trio of victories

The Hewlett varsity wrestling team came out smoking at its first dual meet as the Bulldogs defeated three different squads Dec. 11.

Behind pins by Rob Rosenberg and Matt Kevelson, Hewlett downed Oceanside 48-22. Against what is considered a very good Kellenberg team, the Bulldogs carved out a 48-36 victory as seventh-grader Owen Bachelder (2-1) began the match with a pin and sophomore Simon Greebel followed that with a gutty 11-8 win.

Then Aaron Weinberg pinned his opponent and Rosenberg (2-1) collected a 4-2 decision. Hewlett finished strong with pins by senior Troy Smith (28 seconds), senior Jordan Browdy and Simon Turkin (2-0). Smith (2-0) earned MVP honors.

In their final match, the Bulldogs gained some revenge for defeat on the football field as they pounded out a 58-9 triumph over Lynbrook. Greebel (2-0) ignited the rout with a pin, then Smith pinned his opponent in 40 seconds.

Matt Appelbaum, a Silver Medal winner at Long Beach, dominated in a 15-2 victory. Junior Habner “Pepper” Sanchez won on a pin and Turkin also put his opponent on his back.
