Incumbent Sanitary District 1 Commissioner Frank Argento was re-elected with XXX votes on July 8 for his third five-year term as part of the six-member board, which helps to oversee an entity that has more than 100 full-time employees and picks up about 39,000 tons of solid waste annually.
Argent,a Lawrence resident who is the general manager of the Rockaway Hunting Club, who ran unopposed, said that the district is "continuing finding ways of improving service the last few years.”
One of the improvements Argento pointed to is shifting from a biweekly to a weekly collection of recycling items and establishing separate crews of workers to handle that task.
The district, headquartered in Lawrence, does the trash and recycling collection for more than 50,000 residents and a variety of businesses and institutions in the villages of Cedarhurst, Lawrence, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck and Woodsburgh, and in Hewlett, Inwood and Woodmere, along with the unincorporated areas of Lynbrook and Green Acres.
The re-elected commissioner said the district will continue to keep costs down, while maintaining the service residents have enjoyed the past several years.
