Betty Dickoff was a longtime secretary for the Hewlett-Woodmere School District and served in a similar capacity for 17 years at the National Council of Jewish Woman-Peninsula Section in Lawrence.

In the office above the NCJW Thrift Store, Dickoff and Muriel Lavenda struck up a friendship that Lavenda said made it easier to get through the workday. “She was just a friendly, outgoing person and I related to that, and we seemed to hit it off,” Lavenda said.

Dickoff died on May 26 in Myrtle Beach after complications from a stroke. She was 91.

Her family said that, “she shared a most loving spirit with family and friends, working as a secretary,” and “with Westinghouse in school systems all over Long Island.”

Dickoff grew up in Rockaway, lived in Hewlett most of her life, then in Rockville Centre for about 10 years before moving to Myrtle Beach in 2012 to be with her family.

Lavenda who worked for the NCJW for 36 years said, that she and Dickoff “agreed on most subjects,” and described Betty as someone who was “very pleasant, somebody I could call a friends as well as a co-worker. She had a sense of humor.”

She is survived by her sister Jeanne Nathanson; sons Matthew and Mitchell; daughters-in-law Shannon and Ewa; grandchildren Everett and Lee Laurance; and Nikki Graham, with husband Toby and sons Colton, Tyler and Levi; the Nathanson families; and the countless relatives and friends with whom she shared an amazing lifetime of memories. Her husband, Everett, and son Bruce, predeceased her.

“We’ll celebrate your life daily as you join the love of your life, Everett, and your son Bruce, for eternity,” her family said.

Bonnie Sperry, the section administrator for the Peninsula Section, said that Dickoff “was and will continue to be an inspiration to all.” “I have been a volunteer and past president for 20 years, and Betty was amazing and loved by our organization,” Sperry said. “I consider it an honor to now work in the office that she spent so much of her time in. I still feel her here and remember all the good times we had.”
