HAFTR Highlights

Busy week for school teams

Posted

Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway (HAFTR) High School students took part in many games and competitions during Presidents’ Week.

To start off the week, on Presidents’ Day, HAFTR High’s varsity basketball team, the Hawks, faced off against the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County in the playoffs. After a suspenseful game, we won! The final score was 62-52. The team is on track to defend its championship.

HAFTR High School offered all students the opportunity to participate in the American Mathematical Competition (AMC) on Feb. 17. The AMC is given throughout the nation to high school students. All students who score over 100 go on to the second round. There, the number of students is further condensed leading up to participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad — the most difficult and respected test in the world.

The Wednesday test was handed out and directions were given: six points for each correct answer, 1.5 points for each question left out, and zero points for a wrong answer. A perfect score would be 150. We had 75 minutes to complete 25 questions.

That leaves three minutes for each question, three times as much time as is allotted per question on the ACT. I answered 12 questions. The tests were collected and sent to the Mathematical Association of America to be graded. Hopefully, the scores will come back by the end of the month. Even more optimistically, someone will receive over the minimum requirement.

On Thursday, the HAFTR High Debate team had a meet at Salenter Akina Riverdale (SAR) High School. The team split into pairs, each debating twice. The main opponents were Stella K. Abraham, Davis Renov Stahler, Rambam and SAR high schools. Overall, three HAFTR teams won three debates and lost one.

Earlier that day, Feb. 18, HAFTR sent its junior varsity and varsity College Bowl teams to a Yeshiva League competition. The varsity team performed very well, winning three out of four games with a total league record to date of 6-1.

At the end of the week, school spirit was stronger than it had been at the start. We wish all of our academic and sports teams the best of luck in their upcoming competitions.
