Cedarhurst native and World War II veteran Lester Lewis Hoffman died on March 24.

Hoffman, who also lived in Boca Raton, Fla., enlisted in the Navy and served in Naval intelligence during WWII. He eventually graduated from the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. Due to being a veteran his family was honored at the burial with an American flag.

A mastery of drafting skills helped him enjoy a successful career as a patent engineer with his own business in New York City. He also had an artistic flair and as a talented painter won medals for his work from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Arts Students League.

He was predeceased by his brother Donald and a son, Wayne Hoffman. Hoffman is survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart Phyllis Hoffman, and sons, Jeffrey and Mark Hoffman, daughter-in-law Maureen, grandsons Matthew and Ryan and sister Vivian Anderson.

His grandsons were the love of his life and his family said, “he was the light of our lives: we will cherish and miss him!”
