Central American Independence Day was celebrated by more than 1,100 people at the Five Towns Community Center on Lawrence Avenue in Lawrence, on Sept. 14.

The all-day event, organized by Peter Sobol, Juan Zepeda and Byron Alverado, along with Five Towns Community Center Executive Director Bertha Pruitt, included men’s and women’s soccer games, music provided by a DJ and refreshments.

Central American Independence Day is observed on Sept. 15 as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua celebrate 192 years of independence.

National Hispanic Heritage Month also begins on Sept. 15 and recognizes the diverse Hispanic culture.
