Local residents joined with religious leaders from Israel, Holland, Colorado and Florida to celebrate the dedication of a new Torah scroll at the Chabad House of Hewlett on Nov. 23.
Residents had the opportunity, with the help of a sofer (scribe), to write the last letters of the new Torah that was dedicated by the Ginzburg family. The Traveling Torah Scroll will journey around the world to smaller Jewish communities that don’t have their own Torah. The first stop for this one is Destin, Fla., for the Chabad led by Rabbi Shaya Tenenboim.
There was musical entertainment, dancing and a buffet lunch, along with a brief prayer for peace in Israel led by Rabbi Elad Cohen, from the Jewish state. For the children there was a build a Torah activity, they had their names written on authentic parchment with feather ink by a scribe and a special presentation on the making of parchment, ink and the quill.
