Charity begins in the community’s backyard

More than 240 people attended Woodmere-based Community Chest South Shore’s annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors fundraising dinner at the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club on Nov. 3 in Lawrence, where Carol and John Harrison and Susan and Michael Kerr were honored for their service.

The Neighbors fund was created to be an emergency source of money for social workers representing local service organizations that operate in South Shore communities, to help their clients who are facing unusual hardships.

Five families who received aid during 2016 offered their diverse stories and heartfelt thanks. “Charity should start in your own backyard where one can really see the good their charitable contributions can bring to their neighbors,” Susan Kerr said.

Community Chest continues to raise money for future financial assistance, and the organization is preparing to help turn hardships into hope. To donate, call (516) 374-5800 or email rblock@communitychestss.org.
