Commemorating the Year of the Dragon at Number Five School

Students, teachers and administrators at Number Five School in Cedarhurst took time from their busy day to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Feb. 2. The Year of the Dragon was marked by a parade of second-graders marching throughout the building.

Decorative dragons made the students and veteran art teacher Dan Smalley were the highlight of the parade that stepped off in the front hallway and proceeded upstairs, then down to the gymnasium.

In Chinese history, the legendary dragon was a symbol of the emperor and since it is coated with mysterious colors, the dragon is considered unpredictable and untouchable. Combine those attributes with not being able to see its head and tail at the same time and the thinking is something unexpected could occur in 2012.
