Debate over sports in Lawrence schools heats up as coaches speak out

The Lawrence School District will not take part in in the only "low risk" winter sport  it runs which is track, and the fall and spring sports seasons are still to be determined, according to Superintendent Dr. Ann Pedersen (see Breakout Box).

Another  Breakout Box includes a news release from the Lawrence Coaches Alliance. "These students have worked incredibly hard preparing for a season that has now been harshly and abruptly snatched away from them," the coaches stated. "These kids deserve the opportunity to create memories, and be the Lawrence family that our administration claims we have always been."

It was expected that the fall and winter sports were going to be canceled with spring remaining a possibility.  There was controversy surrounding the possible cancelations. Depending on who you listen to, canceling the sports seasons is either because of the coronavirus or money.

Superintendent Dr. Ann Pedersen said: “Absolutely not about money, it's about health and safety. “We are waiting  guidance, but as a courtesy to the coaches the athletic director alerted them.  How is this different from spring [2020] being canceled, especially now with the death rate from the virus is at the highest levels. Disappointing and frustrating times.”

Lawrence Teachers Association President Lori Skonberg: “As you know the district will say it’s about Covid, however why are we the only district in Nassau County to do this? (Uniondale has now also canceled its winter sports season.) Are you telling me the other districts don’t care about Covid. Attendance, right now, is low at the high school. The only thing keeping these kids in classes are the sports that they thought they were going to play. Once they find out there are no sports to be played, our attendance will go even lower. This is a total disgrace. No clubs, no drama, no chorus, no band, no orchestra and now no sports. All the money that was budgeted by the board, where is that money now?”

The Uniondale School District officially  announced that it was not taking part in winter sports because of Covid-19.  according to sources,  that was expected to happen but because of low student attendance.

Section VIII Coordinator Pat Pizzarelli, formerly the athletic director at Lawrence, said so far he has nothing in writing from the school district about canceling the fall and winter sports. As head of scholastic sports in Nassau County, Pizzarelli said the section is ready to go with a moderate sports schedule of gymnastics, swimming, bowling and track with schedules already assigned to get underway on Jan. 4.

“All the time I was there,” he said about Lawrence, “the board never hurt the kids. Kids go to school to be involved in things. They shouldn’t hurt kids. I hope they change their minds.”  Pizzarelli added that schools have not been identified as “superspreaders” what would it hurt if the students stayed a little longer for clubs and sports.

Lawrence students proteted in Cedarhurst on Dec. 11, citing their oposition to no sports and no virtual clubs.

There is a petition on change.org asking for support to save Lawrence' s sports seasons.

The Board of Education will hold  livestreamed special meeting on Monday, Dec.  14 at 8 p.m. The livestream  link will be posted on the district website, lawrence.org.
