Defense and saves were aplenty in Davis Renov Stahler (DRS) High School’s 4-0 shutout over the RAMAZ Rams on March 3, as effort and teamwork led the Woodmere-based school to victory. “It was a total team effort,” said Wildcats head coach Larry Gross. “We played the best we played all year.”
DRS came into the game with a 12-2 record, tied for first place in the Eastern Conference of the Metropolitan Yeshiva High School Athletic League with the HAFTR Hawks. The Wildcats will face the Frisch Cougars of Paramus in the semifinals.
Defensive teamwork led the game for the Wildcats, as they kept possession throughout the majority of the game, and goalie Ari Gutenmacher made numerous diving saves. “The whole team really played together; we played as a complete team,” said senior forward Jeremy Barth. “We kept possession of the ball the entire game and didn’t let them get the ball.”
The Wildcats also led the game offensively, as junior David Soffer scored the first goal of the game less than six minutes into the first period with an assist from Jeremy Barth. In the second period, Sammy Rauch scored on a DRS power play with an assist from Soffer, as the crowd roared with excitement. Captain Avi Genachowski scored two goals as well, sealing the victory.
DRS assistant coach Rabbi Steven Genachowski attributed the win to the squad’s overall effort and its goalie. “We got a great effort from the entire team and got it done,” he said. When asked about the most valuable effort, he said, “In a shutout game, you gotta give it to the goalie.”
