Two 4th Precinct police officers were injured as they apprehended a Far Rockaway man for allegedly stealing items from vehicles on Lord Avenue in Lawrence on Aug. 8, police said.

The officers responded to a call concerning a man looking into vehicles in the area of Lord Avenue. Tyrone Hayward, 25, of Seagirt Avenue, was found walking south on Central Avenue and the Nassau Expressway around 1:30 a.m.

It was discovered that Hayward had two GPS devices, a Bluetooth speaker and a bottle containing Methadone pills that didn’t belong to him, according to police.

As the officers attempted to arrest Hayward, he fled on foot and headed south across the Expressway. Hayward was caught with the help of several officers in front of 833 Central Ave. in Far Rockaway.

Police said that he “flailed his arm in a violent manner” that struck two officers with enough force to injure them. One suffered a strained left wrist and another officer injured his right toe. Both were treated at a local hospital, then released.

Hayward is charged with two counts of assault-second degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 8.
