Fashioning together two successful Hewlett High School events

The first annual Senior Fashion Show took place in the Hewlett High School auditorium on March 29. The Parent-Teacher Association and Senior Student Council was instrumental in planning the festivities, which ranged from auctioning dozens of items, coordinating a dance team performance and selecting the fashion show models.

Local stores such as Jolie Fleur, Morton’s, Trinkets, Ask Alice Boutique and Feldman Tuxedos sponsored the fashion show. Trinkets generously allowed the models to keep the clothes they wore at the show.

The show was previously organized by the Students Against Destructive Decision; however, the event ceased to exist a few years ago. The PTA and Senior Student Council decided to resurrect the event to raise money for the Senior Night in June. The senior auction was previously organized by the Senior Student Council. The last senior auction was two years ago, which led the student council to push for a return of the auction. It was decided to combine the fashion show and the auction into one amazing event.

Some of the auctioned items included the famous brownies baked by Hewlett’s Advanced Placement chemistry teacher, the principal and assistant principals’ parking spaces, a certificate to have a drawing commissioned by the AP Art teacher, a dinner with two social studies teachers — Mariah Duffy and Rachel Rosenberg — to which eight students can attend, Ray Bans sunglasses, autographed sports memorabilia, sporting events tickets and gift certificates to local stores.

Ashley Shanab, Student Council secretary and member of this year’s graduating class called the event a great success. “As the first annual senior night fashion show and auction, everything went great,” she said. “The whole night was a success, people had a great time, and we raised a lot of money for Senior Night.”

Principal William Galati emceed the event. He joked that he was selected from “over 1,000 resumes” for the position. Galati served as the auctioneer and noted the store that donated each outfit the models wore.

Student Council President Ian Acriche, also a model in the fashion show, said that he is so proud of the hard work done by the PTA and the Student Council to plan the event. “It was great to be able to bring back two well-known traditions at Hewlett High School. The enthusiasm from the seniors was great, and I only expect this event to become ever more popular and more exciting in the coming years.”

Another monumental event will be taking place at Hewlett High as the annual Cabaret Night performance is on Saturday, April 6 at 7 p.m. After difficulties planning the event and raising money in previous years, the administration struggled to find someone to advise the Cabaret Night Club and oversee the event.

Luckily, a former student stepped up to organize Cabaret Night and has been working tirelessly with all of the students involved to put on an exceptional performance. The event raises money for pediatric cancer research in honor of a former Hewlett High

School student who died of pediatric cancer several years ago. The event is anticipated to be a great success this year. Tickets can be bought at the door, but they sell out quickly!
