More than 300 people participated in a community-wide food drive hosted by Congregation Sons of Israel in Woodmere last Sunday sponsored by the UJA-Federation of New York that collected enough items

to fill the JCC’s kosher food pantry’s shelves. The items were brought to the pantry during the day.

The food pantry, the largest of its kind on Long Island, is located at 1012 Central Ave. in Woodmere, and feeds 260 families a month, officials said. It was also helped by a generous anonymous donation of 200 chickens for the upcoming Passover holiday.

In addition to helping feed people in need, it has assisted a family going through a rocky relationship between the parents put together a bar mitzvah.

Food pantry officials said that despite the Five Towns perception as an upscale community there are many families who need a helping hand.
