Fire at Shoe Repair in Woodmere causes evacuations

The Woodmere Fire Department responded to a fire at 716 West Broadway, Woodmere on Aug. 29 at 3:59 p.m.

The building is the site of Shoe Repair, which is part of a shopping area that includes Leah’s Day Spa and Jerusalem Florist. According to the Woodmere Fire Department, the fire was caused by a piece of machinery in the store.

There were no injuries, however, the neighboring stores were evacuated due to the smoke.

In addition to the Woodmere Fire Department, the Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Meadowmere Park, Valley Stream, Lynbrook and East Rockaway Fire Departments assisted in putting the blaze out.

Aug. 29 had a high temperature of 91 degrees, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito wrote on Facebook, “Prayers are with my brothers and sisters from the Woodmere Vol. Fire Department and those responding to a commercial building fire on West Broadway… This weather is brutal for fighting fires. Stay safe & stay hydrated.”
