Firefighters from four departments quickly brought an apartment fire under control, at 240 Central Avenue in Lawrence on Aug. 23.

Shortly after 9 p.m., firefighters from Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood and Woodmere fire departments responded to the apartment building and discovered a fire than began in the kitchen of apartment 1G, said Joseph Sperber, chief of the LCFD.

The blaze forced the evacuation of several residents, but no injuries were reported. The fire was contained to the apartment, but there was some smoke on the first and second floors of the three-story building, Sperber said.

“The fire was not suspicious and residents were able to return to their apartments after the area was deemed safe,” Sperber said. However, apartment 1G was damaged and cannot be occupied until repaired.

Valley Stream Fire Department was on stand by in case of an additional alarm.
