Five Towns community is ‘Fit for Life’

Posted

On Tuesday, April 26 the Youth Council D.I.V.A. of the Nassau County Section of the National Council of Negro Women visited the Head Start program at the Five Towns Community Center to foster a day of physical fitness for the preschoolers to fight obesity through their national program ‘Fit for Life.’ Today, one-third of all adults are now classified as obese, a figure that has more than doubled over the last 30 years. During that time, the percentage of children and teens who are overweight has more than doubled, and nearly one in four African-American children and teens are overweight.

The Nassau County Section of the National Council of Negro Women is fighting the obesity crisis with the help of the ‘Fit for Life’ obesity project developed by the National Institutes of Health and the National Council of Negro Women. ‘Fit for Life’ offers workshops for parents and young people that emphasize improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and reducing screen time.
