Five Towns Crime Watch

Joshua Mackay-Smith, of Hewlett, was arrested for the second time in four days after he and Oskar Puk, of Inwood, allegedly physically grabbed a cell phone from a 17-year-old who was standing outside his Church Street residence in Inwood at 7:45 p.m. on Feb. 22, according to police.

Mackay-Smith and Puk demanded cash and the young man’s phone. They took the phone and fled on foot, police said. The young man called police and provided them with a description of the pair.

Fourth Precinct officers found Mackay-Smith on Stanley Street in Inwood, arrested him and recovered the phone on Feb. 22. Puk was found a short time walking on Stanley Street and also was taken into custody. In addition, the police discovered the two allegedly took an unspecified amount of money from a 19-year-old Washington Avenue resident who allowed them to spend the night in his home.

Mackay-Smith and Puk are both charged with robbery-second degree and grand larceny-second degree.

They were arraigned in Firs District Court in Hempstead on Feb. 23.

Shortly after responding to a call that someone wearing dark clothing with a hooded sweatshirt and carrying a backpack was looking into cars on Webster Street in Hewlett, Fourth Squad officers said they saw Joshua Mackay-Smith, 16, attempting to hide in a bush on Hewlett Parkway at 6:05 a.m. on Feb. 18.

During their investigation, police found Mackay-Smith, who lives on Hewlett Parkway, with two large backpacks that had possessions from vehicles that were reported missing. In addition, he had 60 blue pills believed to be Xanax.

Mackay-Smith was charged with grand larceny-fourth degree, three counts of petit larceny and criminal possession of a controlled substance-seventh degree. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Feb. 19.

Grand larceny — motor vehicle

INWOOD-A 1999 blue BMW on Pearsall Place was reported stolen at 3 p.m. on Feb. 12, police said.

Larceny from auto

HEWLETT-A woman reported that property was taken from her vehicle parked on Westervelt Place between 8 p.m. on Feb. 15 and 9 a.m. on Feb. 16, authorities said.

CEDARHURST-A GPS was removed from a vehicle parked on Chestnut Street between 6 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 9:15 a.m. on Feb. 17, officials said.

HEWLETT-Between midnight and 3 a.m. on Feb. 17 a cell phone was taken from a vehicle parked on Westervelt Place, according to police.
