Views volunteers with respect

To the Editor:
Keeping Inwood and Route 878 clean is a matter of community pride. Congratulations to Pete Sobol, Jimmy Vilardi, George Pappas and their team of Inwood Civic Association volunteers for stepping up and making a difference for the Inwood community (“Keeping Inwood Clean,” June 5-11).
This group of dynamic men who live in all parts of our Five Towns including Eddie Cross, John Squitieri, John Kinder, Chris Chase, Battista Catalano, Perry Ortiz and others, offer their labor, sweat and talents during their precious spare time to maintain the manicured appearance of our community.

Thank you to State Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) for clearing the path with the state Department of Transportation, and for recognizing the value of citizens fighting to improve the quality of life for all Five Towns residents.
Please join me in saluting their efforts and appreciate their work by keeping our communities clean. These volunteers are true neighbors helping neighbors.

Village’s quick fix is appreciated

To the Editor:
Thanks to Cedarhurst Mayor Andrew Parise for personally attending to a recent village issue.
There is a very small street located in Cedarhurst called Elderd Lane, which I believe is named after Mayor Ernest E. Elderd who was Cedarhurst’s mayor from 1936-’58. Elderd Lane connects Central Avenue (just off of Spruce Street) to parking field No. 2. This parking field, which my law office faces, is a very active lot with about 200 spaces for shoppers, merchants and residents. It is quite busy at times with many people and vehicles moving about.
Along Elderd Lane there is a fenced off space for merchants in the immediate surrounding area to place their garbage. It is then collected by Sanitary District 1 workers on an almost daily basis. This area was in need of repair.
An email was sent to the village on May 23, the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Mayor Parise and two of his staff members arrived and surveyed the area the day after Memorial Day. A brand new fenced off area was completed on June 6, just two weeks later.
The village has placed many floral displays, both potted and hanging, around Cedarhurst making the business district more beautiful. Numerous garbage receptacles are placed strategically throughout the village to encourage pedestrians to properly dispose of their litter. All of these efforts are overseen by the Cedarhurst administration and executed by all of the village employees.
Thank you, Mayor Parise, and the entire Village of Cedarhurst staff for keeping our village clean and beautiful.
