Five Towns Letters to the Editor

New advocacy group formed

To the Editor:
First, we would like to thank County Legislator Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence) for all the hard work he did on our behalf to see our vision of improving our neighborhood become a reality.
We are very pleased that Kopel and County Executive Ed Mangano responded almost immediately, letting us know that funding had been allocated, and that plans are nearly finalized for a three-phase project to renovate West Broadway.

The community is very excited about the West Broadway restoration project; however, resurfacing and new curbs will only address half the issue. To fully restore West Broadway, we must also address the decommissioned, broken or leaning utility poles and the abundance of no-longer-used electrical wires and cables. Our understanding is that this aspect of the project requires the full cooperation and direct participation of our local utilities.
As we look forward to the start of this project, we have formed the Five Towns Beautification and Safety Improvement Committee to represent the community during this process and to advocate for a successful outcome.
To address the concerns about the utility equipment, we are requesting an opportunity to meet with qualified representatives of the specific utility companies involved to discuss the matter.
We would appreciate support from Kopel in helping to connect us with those companies, and to advocate for and represent us with their representatives.
Once again, we appreciate that our elected officials have heard and responded to our concerns, and we look forward to fulfilling our goal of fully restoring West Broadway, resulting in a safer and more beautiful Five Towns.
