Five Towns receives a fraction of snow predicted

A messy nor'easter swept across the Five Towns early Tuesday morning, bringing with it a mix of snow, sleet and rain.

National Weather Service forecasters had predicted 12 to 18 inches of snow and high winds for Nassau County. On Tuesday, the prognosticators were calling for three to six inches of snow in the South Shore communities of Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence and Woodmere, and surrounding areas.

Freezing rain and sleet will continued to fall in the Five Towns until about 8 p.m. Winds were expected to gust as high as 48 miles per hour on Tuesday, blowing snow and slush across local streets.

The Center for Adult Life in Enrichment will be closed Wednesday. Morning events at Peninsula Public Library are cancelled for March 15.

"It's another one of those predict a big one get a small one," Weinstock said about the calls for nearly 2 feet of snow. The mayor's concern now is that it will be icy as temperatures were expected to drop.

Woodsburgh mayor, Lee Israel said no matter the weather predicted the village is prepared. "An an incorporated village we will do our utmost to maintain the highest level of service that we can provide to our residents," he said.

Mark Weiss, mayor of Hewlett Harbor, said that the village will remain vigilant on any possible hazardous conditions that could arise.

“While we will do everything to make our village roads passable," he said. "As a coastal facing village, we are always concerned about flooding, power outages, etc. To prepare, we have brought in additional manpower to deal with snow removal.”

The village roads were pre-treated with salt and sand. Officials remained in contact and mapped where there could be downed trees. A robo call went out to residents asking them to check on their neighbors, he said.
