Going to the dogs

Westminster Weekend at Nassau Coliseum

The nation’s top canines are getting ready to strut their stuff as they prepare to gather at Madison Square Garden for the 134th Annual Westminster Dog Show to crown some new canine champions.
To warm up for the big event, these exceptional dogs will make their way to Long Island for the Westminster Weekend Shows at Nassau Coliseum, Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 11-14. It’s the first time that dog lovers can see these canine contestants up close and personal locally. This annual event – previously held in New Jersey or Manhattan – occurs the weekend before the coveted Westminster Kennel Club Show, hence the name The Westminster Weekend Shows.
Over 3,000 dogs will participate over the four-day period, comprising the sporting, hound and terrier groups, along with 30 breed-specific specialty shows, hosted by local dog clubs. A breed obedience trial, agility and Frisbee dog demonstrations round out the program. “This is more informal than Westminster” said Don Snyder, a breeder of English Springer Spaniels and president of Westminster Weekend Shows. “You’ll see dogs of all ages, from puppies to champions and learn what they’re like as they get older. This show showcases many of the top show dogs and top breeders and trainers from all over America that come in for the Westminster Kennel Club Show.”
Around 1,000 of these dogs will continue on to Madison Square Garden for the main event.
A highlight of the weekend, Snyder said, is the hour-long “Meet the Breeds” session. “It’s an opportunity for visitors to go inside the ring to meet the dogs and speak to the owners and get to know the various breeds.”
When: Feb. 11-14. $12, $8 kids under 12, daily. For schedules and ring times, visit www.westminsterweekenddogshows.com.
