Happy Hanukkah from the Chabad of Hewlett

Posted

It towers over the intersection of Piermont Avenue and Broadway in Hewlett and on Dec. 18, the first night of Hanukkah the first “candle” was lit along with the traditional shamus candle that lights all the rest in the menorah.

The Chabad of Hewlett and community members welcomed the Jewish Festival of Lights, an eight-day celebration, last Sunday. There were treats and Avi Karadi lit the menorah.

Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C.

In the Maccabean revolt, the Jewish people defeated Greek-Syrian oppressors.

A small amount of oil was found to light the temple for eight days. This year Hanukkah ends on Dec. 26.
