It had already produced a crop of herbs, trees and vegetables this summer, but Hewlett-Woodmere School District’s community garden learning center behind the Hewlett House on East Rockaway Road didn’t have a formal opening.
During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 30, the garden was officially opened.
Its first harvest produced several vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes and peppers. Food was donated to the Hempstead-based Interfaith Nutritional Network.
Initiated by the district’s Youth Leadership Forum, the garden is expected to become part of the district’s curriculum, along with a greenhouse that is being built at Woodmere Middle School.
