The Town of Hempstead has declared a state of emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak, leading the town to adjust hours at Town Hall, according to Supervisor Donald Clavin.

Starting March 17, Town Hall will be open, after it closed for a day March 16, but its staff and hours will be reduced. Those hours, during business days, are: Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents should call or use online services to conduct town-related business when possible.

"While many town employees will be working from home," Clavin said, "Town Hall will maintain essential staff to keep government running while also practicing social distancing in its work spaces of six feet or more."

Residents can call the town  (516) 489-5000 and go on Facebook (@HempsteadTown) and Twitter (@HempsteadTown). The town's website will also contain regular updates (hempsteadtownny.gov).

The town Water Department will operate at full capacity, continuing to provide water to its more than 37,000 customers. Sanitation and recycling pick-up will continue on its usual schedule. And the Tax Office will offer drive-thru-only services from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 200 North Franklin St., Hempstead.

All Department of Parks and Recreation activities, meetings, community room activities, physical fitness classes, cultural arts classes, youth programs and Camp ANCHOR activities are postponed until further notice. All 14 town senior centers, Newbridge Ice Rink Arena, Echo Park Indoor Pool Complex and Rock Hall Museum are closed until further notice.
