A man found sleeping in his car with the engine running was arrested after police found a loaded handgun, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine in Hewlett at 2:22 a.m. on Aug. 5.

A man, 47, operating a street sweeper in a parking lot at 1765 Peninsula Blvd., first called 911 and as he was on the phone about what he described as a “disabled motorist” he caught the attention of a 4th Precinct patrol officer, police said.

The officer called for assistance, then approached a gray 2006 Nissan Altima and saw a man passed out in the driver’s seat. The officers began to knock on the window and shake the car to ensure the man was not suffering from a medical episode, according to police.

Police intervention appeared to work, as the man woke up and rolled down the driver’s side window. The officers detected a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The man appeared confused and unsure of his whereabouts, police said.

After an investigation was conducted and Donald Young Jr., 33, of Mitchell Street, Uniondale, was arrested without incident. He is charged with criminal possession of a weapon second-degree, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon third-degree, criminal possession of a firearm, two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance seventh-degree, criminal possession of a weapon fourth-degree and unlawful possession of marijuana. Young is represented by the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County. He was scheduled to appear in court Aug. 8.
