Hewlett edges Lawrence on late goal

Lawrence and Hewlett both failed to capitalize on a myriad of scoring opportunities throughout the second half of their Conference A-V boys’ soccer showdown, which had tie written all over it until junior Luis Campos delivered the winning goal for the Bulldogs with 2:47 remaining.

Campos was in the right place at the right time and converted a feed from sophomore Kelvin Larios for an exciting 2-1 victory Sept. 22 at Hewlett Elementary School. The left-footed shot from 15 yards out barely eluded Lawrence senior goalkeeper Albert Salama, who earlier in the half made the save of the day when he dove to deny sophomore Jimmy Anderson.

“They really controlled the middle of the field most of the game and created more chances than we did, but we had momentum early and I thought the momentum shifted our way again in the last eight minutes,” Hewlett coach Nick Lacetera said. “Any win is a good win because every game is a battle.”

The Bulldogs (3-2 overall) improved to 2-1 against conference rivals, while the Golden Tornadoes (1-4-1 overall) fell to 0-3-1.

“We know we’re better than what our record indicates, but we’ve got to find a way to dig out,” Lawrence coach Patrick Leary said. “We moved the ball nicely at midfield and tightened up defensively from games past, but we’re having some difficulty in the offensive third.

“I think when we start scoring the goals will come in bunches,” he added. “Confidence has a lot to do with it.”

Hewlett broke through early and led 1-0 less than five minutes in when Adam Troyetsky, while in midflight, one-timed home a nifty pass from fellow senior Corey Sider. “We had two beautiful goals today,” Lacetera said. “Adam’s a big part of our offense. He’s been in on a lot of goals so far.”

The goal was Troyetsky’s second of the season, and he also has three assists for a team-leading five points.
