The Hewlett High School student newspaper, the Hewlett Spectrum, took first place in the general excellence category in the 2016 Better Newspaper Contest run by the New York Press Association. NYPA is a professional organization for community weeklies and small dailies across the state.

Judges said: “This newspaper is jam packed with a variety of interesting topics covering school issues and people and commentary on national issues and popular culture, along with good photos and student-drawn graphics.

“I’m giving it a top score chiefly for the compelling content by astute students. Most of all the stories are well written, although some of the ledes could be better by focusing on the main gist of the story rather than on the date events happened. Overall, very impressive.”
