Hewlett, Lawrence now 3-1

Playing without the services of starting quarterback Mark Rizzo, Hewlett bounced back from its Week 3 Conference III loss to Lawrence with a 27-14 victory at Sewanhaka last Saturday in a rematch of last year’s first-round playoff game.

Senior Sam Martorella, who suffered a severe knee injury on the same field last November, had a touchdown run and kickoff return for a score to lead the Bulldogs, who sealed their third win in four games on senior Dylan Sasson’s 48-yard interception return for a touchdown with less than two minutes remaining.

“It’s a real satisfying win,” Hewlett head coach Jay Iaquinta said. “We’re down a couple of guys and they could have the biggest line we’ve ever been up against.”

Junior Zach Richman filled in for the senior Rizzo (hamstring) under center and connected with Michael Gray on an 8-yard scoring strike in the first quarter to make it 14-0. Junior Weldon Irvine spelled Rizzo on punts. Richman took snaps from freshman Matt Kamminer, who held his own and could start again Thursday night at Lynbrook in place of senior Stanley Friedman (shoulder.)

“Zach’s a winner and tough competitor,” Iaquinta said of Richman. “He did great. If he has to make another start and lead us into Lynbrook, we’ll still feel pretty good about our chances.”

Hewlett’s defense was led by senior Jared Brent, who had nine tackles and two sacks in his first full game on the stop unit, and freshman Jeremy Leguillo, who intercepted two passes.

Golden Tornadoes pull away

Junior Tyler Fredericks (257 yards rushing, three touchdowns) and senior Ryan Fredericks (137, 2) combined for five touchdowns on the ground and each had a receiving touchdown to lead Lawrence to a 46-26 win at Glen Cove last Saturday evening.

The Golden Tornadoes (3-1) trailed 7-0 after the opening quarter before getting their engine cranked. Junior Eddie Robinson had three interceptions and senior Chris Donohue made 10 tackles to lead the defense, which played its first full game minus standout linebacker Chris Hercules (broken leg.)
