Hewlett students win Siemens again!

JiaWen Pei, Zainab Mahmood and Priyanka Wadgaonkar are prestigious competition's grand prize winners

In what the sports world would call a dynasty, three Hewlett High School students were awarded the grand prize of the prestigious Siemens Math Math, Science and Technology Competition.

It is the second straight year that Hewlett students won.The results were announced earlier today in Washington, D.C.

This year, JiaWen Pei, Zainab Mahmood and Priyanka Wadgaonkar are the winners with their project, The Isolation and Characterization of an Ozone Responsive Stress Related Protein (OZS) in Ceratopteris richardii,” showed that multiple copies of the gene OZS would increase plant resistance to ozone, resulting in greater crop yields.

In 2012, Jeremy Appelbaum, William Gil and Allen Shin won the $100,000 grand prize for their research in COP1, a key protein in plants and animals.
