Hewlett water main work to take six weeks

New York American Water said $970,000 will be spent to install a new water main along Hewlett Parkway, Westervelt Place and Wheatley Street in Hewlett, through a project that began on June 12 and is expected to take roughly six weeks to complete.

The project will help to address discolored water caused by aging unlined cast iron pipe and includes replacing nearly 2,560 feet of two- and six-inch water main installed in 1924 with new eight- and 16-inch ductile iron water main. Six fire hydrants and 70 utility-owned service lines will  be replaced.

“Water main replacement projects are vitally important to reinforcing our water distribution system and improving our water quality,” New York American Water manager of engineering John Kilpatrick stated in a news release. “Aging water mains are a leading contributor to discolored water and we dedicate a substantial portion of our capital plan budget for these system improvements.”

The main replacement project will take place along Hewlett Parkway from West Broadway to Waverly Avenue, Westervelt Place from Mill Road to Hewlett Parkway, and Wheatley Street from Mill Road to Hewlett Parkway.

Final street restoration will be completed by the Town of Hempstead after the replacement water service lines to each home have been installed and all work has passed all required quality tests from the Nassau County Department of Health.

Work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Residents should be aware that sections of the street night be closed to traffic while work is being done. New York American Water officials said they will coordinate with residents along the impacted streets to minimize disruptions.
