At the Stony Brook School dual meet on Jan. 22, the Hewlett Bulldog varsity wrestling team went 3-1 and outscored their opponents 205-94. After a disappointing loss to Southside the night before, Hewlett rebounded strong jumping out to a 25-point lead against Ward Melville in their first match of this meet.

Simon Greebel, Oren Revivo and Mike Piri recorded falls, Aaron Weinberg scored a victory and Robert Rosenberg pulled out a 9-7-overtime win. Following three consecutive forfeits and a loss, Troy Smith ignited a run of six straight wins as he, Matt Appelbaum, Jordan Browdy and Simon Turkin notched falls and Owen Bachelder dominated in a 7-0 decision. Hewlett 58, Ward Melville 24.

The Bulldogs then dominated the host school with a 59-18 victory as Weinberg (112 pounds) rolled to a 15-0 tech win, In 34 seconds Revivo registered his fall and Rosenberg added three points with a win at 135.

After a few forfeits, Ben Ashkenazi began an eight-match run with a pin. Smith pinned his opponent and Appelbaum’s smart wrestling led to an 11-8 win. Habner Sanchez and Bachelder recorded pins, while Greebel (103), Browdy (215) and Turin (285) gained forfeit wins. Harborfields gave the Bulldogs fits in the third match of the day. Piri gave Hewlett an early 6-3 lead with a pin. But the Bulldogs dropped the next four matches to fall back 24-6.

Ashkenazi provided a spark with his second pin of the day, Smith followed with his third pin and Appelbaum contributed a victory with a 14-4 decision. Turkin dropped a very close 2-1 decision and Hewlett was up by a point.

After a forfeit that put them down by five, Bachelder earned six points and his third win of the meet for a 28-24 lead. But Hewlett lost the last two matches to fall short 40-34.

With third place on the line, the Bulldogs came up big with a 54-12 victory over Putnam Valley. Piri (125) started it rolling with his third pin of the meet. Following a loss and a few forfeits Ashkenazi also gained his third pin of the day, Appelbaum earned a 7-5 victory and Sanchez pulled out a 4-2 overtime win. Then Turkin, Greebel and Revivo put an exclamation point on this match with pins.

Smith (16) won the tournament trophy for most falls in the least amount of time; three in 2:08 total, 59, 26 and 43 seconds. The next Bulldog match is the NIT tournament on Friday, Jan. 28
