Hopping it up for the prom

It’s a night of togetherness, unification, and a revival of the community spirit that lingers within our school community. Yet, it’s a night of seeking out your nemesis, striving to defy and demolish the opposing team. Such an ironic fusion will invade the Hewlett High School gymnasium on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m., as the Court Jesters Comedy Basketball Team will play the Hewlett Knights (Hewlett-Woodmere faculty, teachers, and alumni).
The Jesters are dynamic former college and professional basketball players who not only display their hoop skills, but are also known for their animated performances. The team interacts with the audience, utilizing both their skill and humor to defeat the opposing team. Although, with confidence, optimism, and cooperation, the Hewlett Knights will work diligently to defend their home court and play hard.
To promote the event and encourage students to attend, teachers from the elementary schools, middle school, and high school will brandish their jerseys on the court, proving that not only can they teach, but they can also compete. Hewlett High School’s principal, Dr. Theodore Fulton, has promised students he will proudly attempt a slam dunk, a stunt the students surely will not want to miss. Moreover, former high school principal, Thomas Russo, will be making a memorable guest appearance to show his continuous support for the Hewlett-Woodmere district.
“I’m looking forward to watching my teachers compete against the humorous Court Jesters, senior Allison Locker said. “This event will be bring a great sense of community to our town. It will be nice to gather the youngest kids and even the oldest.”
Although it appears that this welcoming and enjoyable Hewlett High School Senior Night is purely for fun, the event has a rather essential purpose. The high school students are eager to raise much money for their Senior Night, an annual event designed to offer a safe, alcohol and drug-free post prom party for the seniors and their guests. The phenomenal post party is fully funded by money raised with the help of the Senior Night Committee, which is greatly appreciated by the students.
Although raising money is the fundamental goal, this basketball game is perhaps the most perfect break from the winter doldrums and the tedious midterm preparation and angst. A healthy abandonment of the books, in this case, will certainly be beneficial and therefore, I encourage you overwhelmed students to take your well-deserved study break. It’s for a good cause.
This school event, the first one of 2014, epitomizes just what the New Year has brought … a sense of community and togetherness in the Hewlett-Woodmere communities. This Friday will mark a night of laughter and enlightenment and will ultimately contribute to an unforgettable senior prom. And so the prom anxiety begins.
