Lawrence Lately

In loving memory of Mr. Woods

Posted

On the 29th of October, silence filled the halls of Lawrence High School as both students and faculty were notified of Cleveland Woods’ passing.

Although the announcement affected everyone differently, there was a sense of grief felt by all. For many, this was the first time they had lost someone so dear to them.

Throughout the school, Mr. Woods was known for his timeless sense of humor and his incredibly affable personality. Students recounted that he would treat them in the same way he would treat his children — sternly but lovingly. Even though his life lessons were sometimes hard to swallow, he always said what needed to be said.

In spite of Woods’ bold personality, he never failed to show genuine concern for his students and their futures. Those who knew Mr. Woods know how easy it was for him to make others smile.

His stories were seldom without humor, which many students came to appreciate as it would alleviate some of the stress that came with school life.

Following the date of his death, students and staff at Lawrence High have worked tirelessly to commemorate the life of this extraordinary man. Students from the school’s cheer team held a fundraiser and donated the proceeds to the Woods family.

In the school’s lobby sits a large poster reading “for our beloved Mr. Woods.” On this poster, the high school’s students and faculty have been given the opportunity to write messages in memory of Woods. Among these are stories recounting fond memories and others sharing personal statements in solidarity with his family.

The poster is set to be given as a gift to the Woods family and as a testament to Lawrence High School’s admiration of his character.

Woods was many things to many people — a father, a husband, a teacher, a coach. But to the students at LHS, he was a role model.

Many of his students considered him a father figure, and his colleagues, a friend. Lawrence High students are more determined than ever to honor Mr. Woods in the most fitting way: by helping others as he helped them.
