It's Obamacare (and the economy), stupid!

In 1992, Democrats around the country cruised to victory with a simple campaign slogan: “It’s the economy, stupid.” Now, this November, Republicans are looking to recapture that spirit with the slogan, “It’s Obamacare, stupid.”

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives shunned Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and her colleagues and voted more than 50 times to alter Obamacare. An article in the Washington Post pointed out that in congressional floor speeches in the month of March alone, the word “Obamacare” was uttered 293 times, compared with “unemployment,” which was mentioned only 42 times.

I didn’t realize the economy had made such an astounding recovery.

Will Obamacare ever be repealed? I doubt it. But Republicans still have every reason to fight to have it altered, campaign on it and use it to their advantage.

With the Obamacare debacle and cover-ups like Benghazi, there’s a general feeling of disappointment and distrust toward the Obama administration. This sentiment has led to a plummet in President Obama’s approval rating and a re-galvanizing of the Republican Party base. According to a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, Obama’s approval rating fell to 41 percent, the lowest of his presidency, down from 46 percent just three months ago.

Only 42 percent of Americans approve of his handling of the economy; just 37 percent approve of how he has handled the implementation of Obamacare; 34 percent approve of his actions involving Ukraine and Russia.

Obama’s poor handling of major issues has created a weak political atmosphere for all Democrats. In that same poll, respondents were asked which party they trust more to do a better job of handling the economy. Only 41 percent said Democrats.

These are daunting numbers for the Democratic Party. As of now, Republicans are favored to maintain control of the House in November, and are now focusing much of their efforts on taking control of the Senate. There is a real possibility that Sen. Harry Reid could become minority leader.
