Jumping, reading in the park

Hewlett-based Gift A Book partners with pro jump roper to get kids exercising and learning

Posted

The Hewlett-based Gift A Book Foundation partnered with Lucie B’s Jump ‘N Fun at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem to get kids moving and reading with jump rope professional and master instructor Lucie B (Buissereth) during a three-hour event on May 18.
After learning how to jump rope, each child received a new book provided by Gift A Book, a nonprofit organization that addresses the literacy needs of children in low income communities. For four years, the foundation has given books on a monthly basis to kids in after-school programs.
By introducing “book ownership” to children in disadvantage neighborhoods and encouraging a love of reading, foundation founder Paulette Greenfield and other volunteers seek to eliminate the educational disparities between at-risk youth and their peers in more affluent communities. The goal is to help children to succeed in school and life one book at a time.
Buissereth practiced family/Ob-GYN medicine for two years. She stumbled upon jump rope competitions and realized a passion for helping other through jumping rope. Suffering through obesity as a child — she weighed 145 pounds at 9 — Buissereth looks to help individuals with weight issues. After winning many jump roping competitions, the New York City resident created her business. She teaches children and adults.
