Lawrence pre-K kids ‘stop, drop and roll’

Pre-kindergarten students in the Lawrence School District received an up close and personal look from volunteer firefighters of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department to mark Fire Prevention Week now in its 100th year.

Established in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association, this year’s theme is Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.

The students learned about the importance of having a fire escape plan and fire prevention. Excited to see the firefighters in full gear, the children got a hands-on experience as they took turns looking at the assortment of firefighting equipment. The students then reenacted and drew pictures about what they learned.

Patricia Almonaitis, the school district’s Pre-K director, thanked the firefighters for visiting with the students. “It’s important to educate our students about keeping safe and what to do in case of an emergency,” she said in a news release.
