Lawrence tennis is taking its swings

The Lawrence Men’s Tennis Club July 4 tournament ignited a slow starting summer season at the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club with an exciting and competitive finals match won by two points by Captain Barry Bergen, of Lawrence; new member Ken Frost and Michael “Champ” Krauss, both from Oceanside; and Lawrence resident and longtime club member Ed Gottlieb.

Weekend play was hampered by poor weather through June after the opening and awards breakfast on May 26. The annual Fourth of July competition had its share of fireworks as the momentum and score swung back and forth several times in the final.

Since 2016, when Lawrence resident Dr. Allan Simon became president of the men’s tennis club, membership has increased exponentially and the enthusiasm to hit the courts has hit an all-time high, club members said. Simon’s motto is “Let’s make Lawrence fun again!”
