Inwood-based Five Towns Early Learning Center and Five Towns Community Chest in Woodmere joined together on July 29, as staff and board members of both civic organizations toured the refurbished premises of the Early Learning Center. The educational facility sustained severe damage during Hurricane Sandy.

“This event brings together people with a common interest — to help the children of the community,” said Early Learning Center Board President Elizabeth Ropers.

The Community Chest and its Youth Board held its second annual “Flapjack Breakfast” on May 18, which raised approximately $1,600 to help repair the Learning Center’s damaged outdoor classroom and playground. “The purpose of tonight’s event is camaraderie and to socialize with the staff and board members of the Early Learning Center,” said Steven J. Spiro, president of the Community Chest.

Applebee’s sponsored the barbecue for the event, while Mauzone and Community Chest board member Danny Gluck provided the kosher fare. “This event is in appreciation for the Five Towns Community Chest and its Youth Board for restoring our playground after Hurricane Sandy,” said Paula Robinson, the executive director of the Early Learning Center.

Community Chest has been a major sponsor of the Early Learning Center, which provides year-round quality early childhood education and care for 54 children from working families in the Five Towns, between the ages of 18 months and 5 years.
