The sixth annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships & Charities Tournament, usually held in the Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence, will take place under the Brooklyn Bridge at the renowned Gleason’s Gym.

West Hempstead resident Mike Carryl founded the LIABCC and serves as its president. There will be two weekends of exciting and competitive boxing as the preliminaries will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13 and Sunday, Aug. 14 with the semifinals and finals a week late on Saturday, Aug. 20 and Sunday, Aug. 21.

Winners of the senior and female divisions will be considered for the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships & Charities Inc. travel team. Last year winners participated in the XXXIX La Romano International Invitational Tournament in the Dominican Republic.

With only months away from the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the tournament will see many aspiring Olympians in action, trying to make the U.S. team’s final cut.

“Winners from the tournament each year will have the opportunity to participate in an international tournament like the Roman Cup allowing participants to become acclimated to Olympic-style boxing,” Carryl said.

The deadline for applying to the tournament is Sunday, July 31. Applications can be accessed at www.liamateurboxing.com. Final registration and check in will take place at Gleason’s Gym on Aug. 12 between noon and 7 p.m.
