Barry Schwartz, a leader who served his communities in New York and Florida

Barry Schwartz captained the football teams as a senior quarterback at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, was the longtime Parks Commission chairman for the Village of Lawrence and served two residential communities, Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla., and the Bristol Plaza in Manhattan. The longtime Lawrence resident died on Feb. 22 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in Manhattan.
He was 74.

Inwood father donates kidney to son

It is announced that Inwood resident Rudi Chiapot will donate a kidney to his then 5-year-old son, Christopher, a pre-kindergarten student at he Number Four School in the Lawrence district.
After a few stops and starts, the surgery is performed later in the year at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Faculty and students at the Number Four School raised $4,000 to help defray expenses and the Five Towns Community Chest also aided the family.
