Mary Brennan, how does the Hewlett garden grow?

Posted

The Hewlett Community Garden that is behind Hewlett House on East Rockaway Avenue in Hewlett grows a variety of vegetables and Long Island native tree in eight raised beds that are 30-feet long. Six of the beds are 4-feet wide and two are 6-feet wide. There is also a composting shed.

After the food is harvested a majority is distributed to a local soup kitchen and church groups. Produce from the garden has also been provided to the Hewlett High School cafeteria and local restaurants to help promote a zero-miles-to-plate philosophy, encourage home gardening, and to encourage awareness of sustainable practices in the school district and community.

Produce from the most recent two-hour garden call on Aug. 12, was delivered to the Mary Brennan Interfaith Nutritional Network in Hempstead.
