Minor setback for Lady Bulldogs

Hewlett’s margin for error in its quest to qualify for the Nassau Class B girls’ lacrosse playoffs shrunk with last Friday’s 11-6 setback at Lynbrook.

The Lady Owls scored seven unanswered goals in the second half to erase a two-goal deficit and improved to 3-0 against Conference B-II rivals, while the Lady Bulldogs (5-3 overall) slipped to 1-2.

“They ended up taking control in the end,” Hewlett coach Rosemarie D’Ambrosio said. “There are some positive things we can take from the game, but we continued to struggle on ground balls and had two goals called back.”

Lynbrook’s Nicole Pataky (three), Marykate Regan, Kasey Carter and Julie Wigand all had multi-goal games, and Carrie Feltkamp led the comeback with a goal and three assists in the second half. Freshman Sam DiSalvo’s four goals and sophomore Val DeNapoli’s goal and two assists led the Lady Bulldogs, who were held to their lowest output of the season.

“They specifically tried to shut down Dani [Kandel] and had a player shadow her the whole game,” D’Ambrosio said. “The younger girls really stepped up. Sam and Val are all-around midfielders and keys to our transition.”

Kandel, also a midfielder, scored once and has 30 goals on the year. She totaled 11 goals in the previous two games — a 17-12 conference win over New Hyde Park and 16-7 non-league victory over Freeport. “Dani’s having a really good year,” D’Ambrosio said. “She and Jenni [Rogoff] are great captains and the other girls really respect them.”

Rogoff, who scored a team-leading 61 times last spring as a sophomore attack, had a combined 10 points (eight goals, two assists) in the New Hyde Park and Freeport games.

“Beating New Hyde Park was important, and our entire team played well,” D’Ambrosio said. “We set a goal to come out strong and play our hardest. We built a lead and never gave it up.”

DiSalvo tallied six goals and one assist and junior goaltender Meri Oshrain made 11 saves in the April 12 win, which came eight days after a disappointing 14-13 home loss to Roslyn in the conference opener.
