Never a dull Hewlett High School moment

Posted

The school year is in full action and there is always something going on either inside or outside the doors of Hewlett High School. The fall season for Hewlett students is never dull, even with less daylight time.

The music hallway and auditorium constantly reverberate with sounds of hardworking students and teachers in preparation for the school musical. This year the production is L. Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz”, which is bound to be a success. Various actors and actresses, choreographers and musicians put hours of effort into the show and the school is looking through Nov. 19.

To prepare for the much-anticipated band, orchestra and chorus trip to Disney World in the springtime, many fundraisers are being held to raise money, including fruit, coffee and cookie sales. The ensembles are also rehearsing for their upcoming winter concerts in December to showcase their hard work and talent.

Although the first quarter of the school year is coming to an end, many activities within the school are just beginning. The winter sports season is beginning as athletes attend their respective practices and gather daily with their teammates.

Cabaret Night, an annual event held in the spring to raise money to fight Pediatric cancer, is beginning to prepare and organize for an evening full of dancing, laughing and singing. One of the ways students prepare for the event is by a hosting a hair extension fundraiser, advertised with the slogan “Show you care, extend your hair.” Several students and teachers have made their hair more noticeable with pink, blue, red, green and orange streaks.

Key Club is also doing what they do best: helping the community. It is currently holding its annual canned food drive, where students are encouraged to donate food, assisting the less fortunate to get through the season. The club’s members also went to local supermarkets and asked shoppers to donate cans and food to the cause.

Model Congress, a popular club, is preparing for its upcoming debates in December by convening after school to discuss current events and to practice their debating skills. Model congresses will also take place at other local schools, such as Lawrence and Long Beach high schools.

Within the past few weeks, students have had a significant amount of days off from school because of Election Day, Veterans Day and parent-teacher conferences. However, whenever school is in session, there is never a lackluster moment. Even with hectic schedules and demanding curricula, students manage to devote time and energy into numerous activities. The long Thanksgiving Day weekend will be very much appreciated.
