One step closer to being envoy to Israel

Friedman gains Senate Foreign Relations Committee nod

The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted on Thursday in favor of David Friedman's nomination to be the nation’s next ambassador to Israel.

The 12-9 vote crossed party lines as New Jersey Democrat Bob Menendez cast a yes vote. The full Senate now votes on the nomination.

Friedman, who grew up in North Woodmere and lives in Woodsburgh, served as one of President Donald Trump’s advisors on Jewish affairs during the presidential campaign. He is a bankruptcy lawyer and a principal with the Manhattan law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres & Friedman.

Known for his right-leaning views, Friedman would be the country’s 20th envoy to the Jewish state since the position was created in 1948, the year Israel was established as an independent country.
