A fuel tanker that was carrying No. 2 home heating fuel spilled approximately five gallons of the oil onto Peninsula Boulevard between Oxford Road and Rockaway Turnpike in Cedarhurst at 9:20 a.m. on Sept. 7.

The spill closed one side of Peninsula Boulevard to traffic for about hour, officials said. “Luckily it was noticed in a timely fashion and only a small amount spilled onto the roadway,” said Joseph Sperber, chief of the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department.

Nassau County’s Fire Marshall hazardous material teams inspected the area and the truck following the clean up and permitted the roadway to reopen and deemed the vehicle safe to operate, Sperber said. “Apparently the nozzle accidentally engaged in the open position while the truck was moving, spilling the product onto the ground,” he said.
